Real Time Ultrasound Imaging
At Body Rhythm Physiotherapy we use Real Time Ultrasound Imaging as an assessment tool. It allows both the Physiotherapist and the patient to see the desired muscles contract and relax on the screen. This is particularly useful in assessing the activation, control and endurance of deeper muscles such as your pelvic floor and transverse abdominis muscles.
Real Time Ultrasound Imaging is a painless, non-invasive procedure. During the assessment, an ultrasound probe is placed on top of your abdominal skin to analyse the function of your deeper muscles, which will be visible on the monitor. A full bladder is required for better visibility of the pelvic floor muscles hence you may be asked by your physiotherapist to drink 1-2 litres of water 1 hour before the appointment and refrain from going to the toilet beforehand.
This assessment tool is frequently used in the following conditions:
- Low back pain
- Back or pelvic pain during pregnancy
- Urinary Incontinence
- Urgency to go to the toilet
- Rectus Abdominis Diastasis
- Feacal Incontinence
You will be assessed on the activation and endurance of your muscles by your physiotherapist to provide you with an appropriate home exercise program.
