Orthotics & Braces
What are orthotics?
Many people have persistent or recurring pain their legs and feet. If you have an ongoing pain, we recommend a biomechanical assessment of your legs and feet by your physiotherapist.
Orthotics are beneficial for people with faulty foot mechanics. Some common faulty foot mechanics can occur due to:
- Flat feet
- High arched feet
- Excessive pronation
- Bowlegs (Genu varum)
- Knock knees (Genu valgum)
Orthotics are commonly referred to as shoe inserts, arch supports or insoles. They fit inside to improve feet biomechanics and realign your feet to a neutral position. Orthotics are designed to improve pain and function in the foot, heel, leg and back.
What are braces?
There are 2 main types of braces: Support braces and Postural braces.
A support brace helps to:
- Relieve your pain
- Reduce load on your muscles and joints
- Protect injured structures (especially in an acute injury)
- Provide stability
A postural brace helps to:
- Act as a reminder to maintain good posture
- Improve postural awareness
- Improve “hunching” or “slouching”
- Relieve your pain
How do I know which one to get?
To help you achieve full resolution of your pain or injury, your Physiotherapist at Body Rhythm Physiotherapy will assess your feet biomechanics, leg alignment, walking and / or running pattern to prescribe orthotics if required. In conjunction with physiotherapy treatment techniques and exercise, physiotherapists at Body Rhythm Physiotherapy are skilled to prescribe the orthotics. In some cases, your physiotherapist can use corrective taping to simulate the action of an orthotic to determine whether an actual orthotic will help you.
We also prescribe various braces for different body parts depending on the condition. We will talk you through the advantages of each brace and are able to order in specific requests. If you require a brace, we will ensure you get the right one that will aid your rehabilitation.
